A lyric in Kathleen Elle's new single and album, "Brainwaves," is also the rule that has guided Kathleen's music career.
Four years since the release of her multi-award winning debut EP “Helium,” Kathleen Elle launched her first full album, “Brainwaves.” This 10-track collection of stories about relationships and the joy, sadness, anger, regret, envy and laughter they bring, was released on all digital platforms at midnight on May 15th.
Elle unexpectedly discovered her talent for writing music after taking a music writing course on a whim in high school. One of the first songs she wrote was an anti-bullying song “Don’t Let Them In” that filled a void in anti-bullying programs by speaking directly to the victim, instead of just to the bully (asking him to stop) or the bystander (asking him to stand up). The song’s message is to be true to yourself, don’t change for bullies, find those who accept you, and don’t let bullies’ hate into your heart. The song won multiple awards and scholarships from Seventeen Magazine, Abercrombie & Fitch, Campus MovieFest, and Lincoln Center. Most impactful though, was a message Kathleen received from a girl in the Philippines that she found it while attempting suicide for the second time due to bullying, and the song saved her life! If there is one thing I've learned in this pandemic it’s that we’ve been worshiping the wrong superheroes.
I have four family members on the front lines of this pandemic: a NJ ICU nurse aunt, an NYC anesthesiologist cousin and his ER doctor wife, and a NJ EMT cousin. Hearing their harrowing stories of risking their lives, as patients, friends and co-workers died around them, I felt at a loss for how I could help. My mom and I, and a few friends, started sewing masks for donation to healthcare and essential workers. To date, we've donated over 2300 masks. Being a singer-songwriter, I also started giving nightly, hour-long free concerts called "Kathleen's Quarantine Corner," through facebook and instagram live to try and spread a little happiness and provide entertainment for those cooped up inside - 70 consecutive shows thus far!
I’m inspired by all my family healthcare workers, but a comment from my aunt is what gave me the idea to write my song “Superheroes in Disguise.” She’s been a nurse for 30 years, and I’ve never heard her complain once. She told me that the Covid ICU was like a war zone and she felt like a veteran returning from the Vietnam War because people could not understand what healthcare workers were going through. It was then that I realized they were like superheroes - superheroes in disguise. The song was written in the next 24 hours.
Being in quarantine, I recorded, produced, and mixed it myself, including all instruments and background vocals. It was mastered at Jankland Recording Studios in Wall. I played the song for my aunt on her birthday, which was also International Nurses Day and she appears on the song cover. I then reached out to my healthcare worker family, friends, and strangers on social media for images for the music video.
I wrote this to thank my mom for all she has done for me. Everything I am and have achieved is because of her support. She's been my medical doctor, cheerleader, therapist, roadie, limo driver, #1 fan, promoter, and best friend. Because of her, I'm able to pursue my dream of making a difference with music!
Kathleen Elle's debut EP Helium aims to inspire, empower and connect with listeners. Her songs "Helium" and "Don't Let Them In" have been nationally recognized and included in motivational videos shown in U.S. schools. She hopes her music speaks to you. lifts you, and encourages you to share!
